Soulfood,
a somewhat trained term, since cooking fashion has discovered it – suddenly
every recipe should touch the soul. In the southern states of America it was
known long before, how food tastes, that got soul. The descendants of the
slaves had learned to prepare a sunday meal with the available means. Their
food became even bolder and more interesting with the influences of the African
and Creole cuisine. Today juicy spare ribs, spicy jerk rub and all the other
delicacies are at home in the American cuisine, from where they are just
conquering the world. And more than a few great cooks celebrate these solid and
spicy dishes as something, that will not make you slim but satisfied
The
Soulfood-book and the accompanying CD establish the missing link between music
and dinner, and illustrate an attitude full of pride and vitality in the face
of poverty and suppression.
The
author, DJ and cook Sven „Katmando“ Christ is collecting soulfood -recipes, -stories
and -music since 15 years. He also looked for alternative ingredients and ways
of preparation, to make soulfood accessible to a wider public. On his travels
in the USA and the Caribbean he interviewed the mothers, aunts and grandmothers
of his friends to get hold of family recipes and secret ingredients. Jamaican
families, Soul singers and HipHop stars have been entertained by him, and often
a special dish has lead to a futher story. There is something special in
soulfood, that manages to take a shortcut into heart and hips.

Nnobody plays Monk like Schlippenbach. In the same way Monk worked on a composition for weeks, Schlippenbach has involved himself with Monk’s work for many years. Listening, analysing, play- ing and with the greatest conceivable respect. Already the 3 CD-recor- dings of Thelonious Monk‘s complete works from Alexander von Schlippenbach together with the band Die Enttäuschung (INTAKT CD 100) are a most impressive documentation of this involvement.
With this present production for which Alexander von Schlippenbach chose some of his “Monk-favourites” – including some of the more rarely performed pieces – to him it was not about working on, re-har- monising or consciously changing the original forms of Monk’s com- positions. Their themes are so multifaceted and complex that it was Alexander von Schlippenbach‘s first and foremost concern to keep very close to these themes and to concentrate his focus on dealing “freely” with the melodies and the rhythmic torque. Monk and Schlippenbach: A stimulated conversation going on and they get along brilliantly, these brothers in spirit!

Maya Homburger and Barry Guy span more than a millennium to join ”Veni Creator Spiritus,” the 9th Century hymn Mahler appropriated for his epic eighth symphony, and Guy’s seven-part tribute to Max Bill, a founder of the concrete art and design movement. What Homburger and Guy achieve is rather stun- ning, as they seamlessly bridge an ethereal paean to the Holy Spirit and a vividly abstract contemporary composition inspired by an artist who sought to create works free of symbolism – and sustain a reverent tone throughout the sequence.
These exchanges between past and present – and between media
– are parenthetical to the album’s framing tale, Homburger and
Guy’s ongoing exploration of the dynamism between composi-
tion and interpretation, a journey for which they are uniquely cre-
dentialed. Between them, they have performed with most of the
principal ensembles of the period instrument movement, which
led them to outlier views about the applicability of Baroque-era
thinking about articulations, colorations, and pitch relationships
